Our Chapter

The Hampton-Newport News (VA) Alumni Charter

On August 4, 1945, 17 Peninsula Kappas proudly accepted their charter from Province Polemarch W. Henry Green, and Laurel Wreath holder Judge Armond W. Scott. The Hampton Alumni Chapter would become only the second chapter to be chartered in Tidewater.

For much of its history the chapter held its meetings in Newport News, VA, and the chapter’s membership was consistently comprised of Kappa men from both Hampton and Newport News. In light of this, in the late 1970s, the chapter petitioned the Grand Board to alter its designation to “Hampton-Newport News.” The new designation would be more in line with the chapter’s demographic makeup and would ensure a unified Kappa presence on the Peninsula. The petition was approved in September 1979.

The Hampton Newport News (VA) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi “Achievement Foundation Inc.” is the charitable arm of our chapter and it was established in 2002. It is a non-profit, tax exempt, publicly supported organization.

The chapter’s history has been replete with organizational and individual achievement. From its infancy to the present time, it has remained fervently true to the creed and objectives of Kappa Alpha Psi, and has worked to promote the welfare of humanity.

Silhouettes National History

Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., led by Grand Polemarch, Dr. Oliver S. Gumbs, officially recognized the Silhouettes as an auxiliary to the Fraternity in 1980. Also, the Board of Directors of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., granted a seat on the Board of the Kappa Alpha Psi Foundation to the National Silhouette President. This was an accomplishment for all Silhouettes. On September 11, 1987, Policy Statement No. 87-12 was entered into the records of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., recognizing the Silhouettes as an affiliate whose purpose is to provide support and assistance for the activities of the Fraternity at Grand Chapter, Province, and Local levels.

The purpose of the National Silhouette organization of wives, widows and sweethearts of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., has been to promote the organization of local Silhouette chapters, provide activities for visiting Silhouettes during Kappa Conclaves, develop national service projects of interest to all Silhouette chapters, establish uniform policies and procedures for all local chapters and most importantly to serve as the official auxiliary to Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.

The Chairman shall be a Liaison between the Chapter and the Kappa Silhouettes. He shall coordinate the involvement of the Chapter in activities, initiatives, and projects sponsored by the Kappa Silhouettes, as well as the involvement of the Kappa Silhouettes in the same for the Chapter.

Within the framework of the Kappa Silhouettes philosophy of self-realization through service, chapters work to implement national program goals in varied ways depending upon their local communities and the special resources of the particular chapter. Through these activities, chapters have made numerous significant contributions.

The Hampton-Newport News Silhouettes play an important support role for the Hampton Newport News Alumni Chapter, Kappa Alpha Psi, Inc. Composed of the wives and sweethearts of members, the Silhouettes support all programs of the Chapter. Of particular note is their active participation in our Kids Christmas Party.

  • Membership is open to the wives and widows of a member of the Hampton-Newport News Alumni Chapter, Kappa Alpha Psi, Inc.
  • Meetings are held in October, November, February, April and May.
  • Sweethearts are highly encouraged to become active with the Silhouettes.
  • Contact Mrs. Shirley Pinckney at (757) 565-1624 for meeting location and membership information.
